Hi!
A few tips for writing essays:
- Remember to include your personality. Be unique, don't stick to typical essay cliches and think outside the box. I included things like my Instagram and my dog in my essay
- Include small details about yourself (that are relevant). They serve to humanize you
- Don't waste time re-stating stuff that's elsewhere in your application. The essay shouldn't be like a laundry list of your accomplishments. You should include things that are elsewhere in your application only if they're linked to what you're discussing in your essay. Even then, expand on them and don't frame them the same way as you did elsewhere
- Don't use overly complicated writing. Adcoms know that 17-18 year olds are writing these essays, not writing experts with an endless vocabulary and very refined turn of phrase
- Make sure the tone is appropriate to the essay you're writing. Your common app can be relatively casual since you're trying to paint a picture of yourself. However, if a supplement is academic based, make sure to make your tone slightly more formal
- For supplements, make sure to include small details about the college. It really shows that you've done your research and aren't copying and pasting the same essay across applications
- Make sure you revise your essay multiple times. Then have parents, counsellors, older siblings, English teachers etc review it (but make sure they're people who know you and your story). However, if there's something that you're completely sure that you want to include, make sure you include it despite what people say
- Don't worry about it too much
